Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in 3D, Italy

October 26th, 2012 No comments

2012.09.11-17. Roman Forum is not so impressive after Ostia Antice and Hadrian’s villa. Here is a lot of of people, and the ancient Roman ruins are highly fragmented. But the trip here can be quite enjoyable if you have an extra half-day. Here still a lot to excavate. For example, on the Palatine Hill there are a fresh excavations that reveal ancient buildings by tens of meters under the ground! Amazingly, the streets of Rome grew by at least 10 meters for a couple of thousand years! This is particularly well demonstrated in the Ara Pacis Museum, north from here near the mausoleum of August. You can dig anywhere and very deep and find something old.

ancient Roman city Ostia Antica in 3D, Italy

October 23rd, 2012 No comments

2012.09.15. Ostia Antica – a very well-preserved ruins of the ancient Roman city to the south-west of Rome. Easiest way to get here is by train from the railway Station Roma Porta S. Paolo, 30 minutes to go. You can use the same subway(metro) ticket. The main street of the ancient city is about 2 kilometers long and runs from the entrance to the museum to the former seaport. On site there is a cafe and a toilet and no fountains with drinking water.
Interestingly, that 2000 years ago, Ostia Antica was a port city on the sea coastline! Then the channel of the river had changed, the sea receded for 3 kilometers and the city was abandoned. Strange, but I did not find specific information on how and why the sea receded.
